Thermally broken aluminium systems
Windows designed for strong thermal performance commonly use a thermal break that separates the inner and outer aluminium sections with lower-conductivity materials. Not all thermally broken systems are equivalent: profile geometry, depth, gaskets, insulation elements, glazing and dimensions all matter.
System depth and design
Aluminium systems can have different construction depths and geometries. Depth can influence glazing capacity, structural behaviour and the performance range, but it should never be considered in isolation from tested whole-window values.
Opening type and glazing
Casement, tilt-and-turn, fixed and sliding solutions have different sealing and use characteristics. A sliding system can be particularly suitable for large glazed areas, while an opening sash may prioritise compression seals and ventilation.
The same aluminium system can accept several glazing compositions. Climate, orientation, external noise, solar exposure, security and size should guide the choice.
Thermal and acoustic performance
Uw describes the thermal performance of the complete window and should not be confused with Uf for the frame or Ug for the glass. When noise is important, system, opening, gaskets, glazing and dimensions should be assessed together.
Large dimensions and aesthetics
Aluminium can support solutions for large openings, where sash size, glass weight, hardware, wind exposure and opening type become especially relevant.
Colours, powder coating, anodised finishes, wood effects, dual-colour solutions, slim sections, concealed sashes and minimalist designs are also part of the final configuration.
What to compare
Ask for the exact system, dimensions, sash arrangement, opening type, glazing make-up, relevant Uw and acoustic data, air/water/wind classifications, finish, shutters and accessories. This makes it possible to check whether two alternatives are genuinely equivalent.
